NVDA: The free software empowering blind people world wide.

NVDA Screen Reader Information video.

Two blind computer programmers from Australia are changing the lives of blind and vision impaired people all over the world with their free screen reader, NVDA.

Without a screen reader, blind and vision impaired people cannot use a computer. However, the cost of screen reading software puts computers out of reach for many people.

That's where not-for-profit organisation NV Access comes in. Led by Michael Curran and James Teh, NV Access has developed the free, open source screen reader NVDA, or NonVisual Desktop Access.

For many blind and vision impaired people, NVDA is the only option they have for gaining access to computers, and therefore to education, employment and independence.

NV Access relies on donations and sponsorship.

With ongoing funding it could continue to improve NVDA and ensure that it remains compatible with the world's rapidly changing technology.

For 30 Years, A Blind Man Has Brought The Written Word To Georgia’s Visually Impaired

Georgia's Reading Radio Service, GaRRS,  Phil Jones, Blind Board Operator

Phil Jones Radio Reader GRRS

Many might take reading for granted. But for those who are blind, it can be a real challenge to access everything that’s written on paper and online. That’s why many who are blind tune into the A Radio Reading Service.

The service broadcasts the written word to visually impaired people all around Georgia and on the web. Volunteers read hundreds of materials over the airwaves each month, including everything from grocery coupons and newspapers to full-length books.

The service started in 1980, and since just about the beginning, one man has been running the boards and working as an announcer and producer. Phil Jones is blind himself, and even after more than 30 years on the job, he still finds it rewarding to help the visually impaired access the written word.

This story is an example of reading radio services in various states.

The Radio Reading Channel is unique ROKU Channel that provides 13  different online radio reading stations in various states and 2 in Australia.

Anyone would enjoy listening to the Radio Reading Channel and its unique content of listening to printed materal being read in various forms.

It  paints a picture in your mind like you are listening to a classic radio show of the past but the picture painted is current events, books, news etc.

Enjoy these online Radio Reader Channels and if possible become a volunteer at one of these stations or make a donation.

BrailleTranslator.org

BrailleTranslator.org is a simple way to convert text to braille notation. It supports nearly all Grade Two braille contractions. 1 or 2 specifies the Grade. 1 for uncontracted and 2 for contracted Braille (if available).

Please consider that a 100% correct braille translation can only be done by a human, as this requires an understanding of the text content. Some Grade 2 Contractions require a text understanding that a machine can't have. For example, the combination wh can be replaced by one character in grade 2, but not when the word is combined of two words. So a(wh)ile is OK, but ra(wh)ide is not.

Braille Numbers—Internationally Standardised

Numbers use the same braille characters as the alphabet letter symbols A to J – with the exception of France.

The number 1 is indicated with the number symbol first, which is the dot positions 3456 , and then the dot position 1.

1
3456      1
2
  3456      12
3
  3456      14
4
  3456      145
5
  3456      15
6
  3456      124
7
  3456      1245
8
  3456      125
9
  3456      24
0   3456      245

Note: French Antoine Braille number symbols are unique characters

Note:When indicating numbers the number sign, dot positions 3456, should be placed before braille numbers to differentiate them from the letter symbols A to J.

  Position 1            .  Position 4

  Position 2            .  Position 5

  Position 3        .   .  Position 6

This is how the number sign looks.  It uses 4 dots in positions 3456.

The basic braille alphabet, braille numbers, braille punctuation and special symbols characters are constructed from six dots.  Each dot represents a different number position 1 thru 6.
